The most extreme Croatian regatta, which is marking the end of the racing season – the Regatta Jabuka – is taking place from November 11th – 13th, 2022 with traditional start in Vodice. This is the 19th edition of this legendary international offshore regatta, gathering over 100 participating sailing boats with their crews.
So, why is this regatta so special?
Well, first of all, it starts at night, at 10pm to be precise. The start time and the length of the route mean that the first sailing boats will arrive at the finish line on the next day, when it’s already dark again! This timing is making a special atmosphere among the crews. The night start is also a spectacle for the mainland audience.
The route is a 110-mile-long day and night sailing trip on the rough open seas, from Vodice to the mystic volcanic island of Jabuka and back. Jabuka contains magnetite in its black volcanic rocks, so as soon as a boat approaches the island, the magnetic needle of the compass goes completely crazy and the usually, useful device loses its reliability.
At the island it is almost impossible to anchor, as the sea is very deep (260 m) all around the shore and there are no rocks bulging out to be used as mooring spots. Jabuka is exposed to all winds. Even the slightest breeze is generating pretty big waves here.
Want to participate? Only with experience!
Depending on the wind speed and direction during the days of the regatta, it can become anything from an extreme and powerful experience full of adrenaline, to an extreme exhausting and never-ending cruise in the absence of wind or small winds.
As the conditions can get very rough, this regatta is only for those with a significant amount of skipper experience. For this reason, the main goal of each crew is to safely finish the regatta, the placement is second priority. Although, we can imagine what a great feeling it must be to cross the finish line first, after such a long cruise and among such a big competition!
Don’t want to miss the regatta feeling, but you have not the needed experience for such an extreme regatta?
No problem! The weekend of this event is an important part of Vodice’s touristic offer, as it is extending the tourist season and reviving the town after a little break from the summer crowds. So, the Regatta Jabuka is not only interesting for the participants, but for all those who want to have a weekend loaded with fun, great sports and good food!
Some of our dear friends and clients will participate at the race, and we wish them good luck and lots of fun!
We will cheer for them at the start and finish line. Feel free to join us!
